Currently you can hear many European governments saying: “But those are people who are not persecuted for political, racial or religious reasons, they are only coming for economic reasons.” But exactly for this reason the International Court of Justice in Den Haag has developed a jurisprudence, which leaves no doubt: Once a humane life is not possible anymore, grounds for asylum are given.

I am very impressed with this church asylum. This is also an expression of solidarity. There are two things, which especially impressed me here: the community spirit and the solidarity of Austria’s civil society. This is one of the most precious things possible, that people, because they are people, no matter where they are from, work together, protect each other and fight for the elementary right to asylum, to protection from persecution and to a humane life.

There are persecuted persons from different parts of the world, from Pakistan, from Afghanistan, but also from the Maghreb. Where they come from, a humane life is not possible. And they can prove so on the basis of their family story. Because of that they have got the right to asylum.

I hope the Austrian government is a democratic, constitutional government, which signed the Geneva Convention in 1951, which signed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which respects the jurisprudence of the International Court of Justice, and that this constitutional government will grant these people asylum.

I spent very impressive moments here. I will most certainly talk to the High Commissioner for Refugees in Geneva and tell him about my impressions. And the High Commissioner will definitely – as I know him – summon the Austrian ambassador and ask what the Austrian Government is intending to do and to keep him informed. This is what I can promise.
