Refugee Camp Vienna: Austrian politicians show a cynical and cruel attitude towards the refugees’ protest
“We demand respect from the higher authorities” – the hunger strike continues
Vienna (OTS) – “Warm accommodation but no debate”, those were the cynical words of Interior Minister Mikl-Leitner. However, neither President Fischer nor President of the National Council Prammer, Mayor Häupl, Vice Mayor Vassilakou, State Secretary Ostermayer, State Secretary Kurz, or ombudswoman Stoisits have given any sign of taking the refugees, who persevere in the church at minus three degrees Celsius, serious as human beings with concrete requests.
We don’t fight for warm beds. We want our future. We want to do something for our life. We request from the government to give us a chance and to hear and answer to our demands.
The refugees hold great respect for the initiative of those nuns who will move into the church on Wednesday in support of the protesters. They hope that the action of the nuns will help to ease the tension of the situation in the church. “We are very proud and happy that Kardinal Schönborn came to visit us and we are looking forward to welcome Sra. Beatrix and her sisters. We hope that with them the church will get more open and warmer, in every sense of the word.” The sisters have criticized that the eviction of the camp as well as the poverty and misery of the refugees is hidden from tourists and citizens. “When the pastor locked the church it had the exact same effect”, a supporter of the protests adds.
“We risk our life here to get a chance for a better life”, a refugee emphasizes, and “we want to stay in Austria”. For this reason, since January 2nd a daily intensive German language course has been organized upon the request of the refugees. Instead of waiting for State Secretary Kurz’ return from his vacation, German language teachers have shown solidarity and begun to offer courses.
“We also want a serious discussion about the situation of the life of refugees here in Austria”, for this reason ombudswoman Terezija Stoisits is called upon to evaluate the conditions in asylum centers and other shelters. The refugees are the best experts in this regard.
Refugee Camp Vienna: Zynische und grausame Haltung der Politik gegenüber dem Protest der Flüchtlinge
“We demand respect from the higher authorities” – der Hungerstreik geht weiter
“We don´t fight for warm beds. We want our future. We want to do something for our live. We request from the government to give us a chance and to hear and answer to our demands.”
“We are very proud and happy that Kardinal Schönborn came to visit us and we are looking forward to welcome Sra. Beatrix and her sisters. We hope that with them the church will get more open and warmer, in every sense of the word.” “Die Sperrung der Kirche durch den Pfarrer hat genau denselben Effekt”, ergänzt eine Unterstützerin des Protests.“We risk our life here to get the chance for a better life”, betont ein Refugee, “we want to stay in Austria.”
“We also want a serious discussion about the situation of the life of refugees here in Austria”, deshalb ist Terezija Stoisits als Volksanwältin aufgerufen, die Zustände in den Erstaufnahmezentren und anderen Unterkünften zu überprüfen. Die Flüchtlinge sind dafür die besten Experten.
