Refugee Camp Vienna: Refugees on hunger strike in reaction to the answer of the Ministry of Interior Affairs

Utl.: Status of toleration demanded for those participating in the protest

Wien (OTS) – We, the refugees want to inform the citizens of Austria that 27 of us who are presently receiving shelter in the Votiv Church have decided to go on hunger strike. The answer of the ministry of the interior to our talk on Friday was to re-introduce only some of us into the system of “Grundversorgung”. This would leave most of us in a situation without any safety and in fear, which is why we cannot simply agree to this condition.

We need a status of toleration (“Duldung”) for all of us who are or were participating in the protest. We had full hopes for a betterment of the situation of all refugees in Austria in form of a fair treatment in the asylum process, better conditions and access to the labour market. Sadly those demands were not met or rightfully discussed on Friday and we are left desperate that we are still unheard by the politicians in these regards. That is why we hope for a continuation of the talks.

Today is a special day for Austria and we would be happy to welcome you in the Votiv Church and on the camp where there will be a party for rights and dignity in the evening. Thank you for all those supporting us in our struggle with their presence in the Votiv Church or who are with us in their thoughts.

A translation into German will soon be provided on the website of the protest camp: http://refugeecampvienna.noblogs.org
